Leadership Development

Looking for new ideas about how to help your students become stronger leaders?  Leadership Lab is a free professional development series open to all Student Life staff. Upcoming sessions include discussions with prominent employers who recruit Ohio State students to learn more about the strengths they see in our graduates, and how students can gain more leadership skills through involvement with Student Life.

The first Leadership Lab is scheduled for Thursday, May 25. An optional “Leadership 101” presentation will be offered from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. as an introduction to leadership theory. The main training will be 1-4 p.m. in the Ohio Union. You can sign up online.   


Generation Rx University

Grant Awarded

Zeta Tau Alpha, Generation Rx and the Higher Education Center are partnering to provide mini-grants to campuses nationwide to provide education on prescription drug misuse. The five-year, $50,000 grant supports the dissemination and use of “Generation Rx University” educational resources through campus student wellness offices or other campus groups. It also supports specific programming to prevent stimulant and opioid misuse. This is facilitated by the Higher Education Center, a partnership between Student Life, the College of Social Work and the College of Pharmacy. More information is online.

Special Olympics

Special Olympics

The Special Olympics Ohio Summer Games will be held here on Ohio State's campus the weekend of June 23 – 25.  Meals for athletes and coaches will be served in the RPAC Tom W. Davis Special Events Gymnasium. Student Life Rec Sports is looking for volunteers to help with this effort. Please e-mail Andrea Hall at More specific information will follow.

Members of The Ohio State University Police Division will participate in the annual Peace Officers Memorial ceremony this afternoon, Friday, May 19, at 3 p.m. outside Blankenship Hall, which is named in memory of Officer Michael Blankenship. OSUPD will remember Officer Blankenship, who died in the line of duty in 1997. Respects will be paid to other officers who have lost their lives, and the officers who continue to serve the university community will also be recognized. The event will include remarks from OSUPD Chief Craig Stone, playing of the bagpipes and a riderless horse. A short reception will follow the ceremony.

The Student Life Collegiate Recovery Community will hold a charity golf tournament on Monday, June 12, at Scioto Reserve Country Club. Money raised at this event will go towards supporting the mission of the Collegiate Recovery Community to enhance the lives of students in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction by creating a supportive peer community and building a network of recovery allies. Former Ohio State and Minnesota Vikings running back Robert Smith will be speaking in the evening at the charity banquet. Banquet-only tickets are also available. President's Prize

Applications are now being accepted for the President’s Prize, an annual award bestowed on two graduating seniors committed to social change. There are online applicant information sessions on Wednesday, June 7, and Thursday, June 29, via Carmen Connect. The application deadline is July 14.

Each recipient will receive a $50,000 living stipend and up to $50,000 in startup funding to implement an innovative project to positively impact a local, national or global community. More information is online.

Assessment Conference

Registration is now open for the 2017 Student Affairs Assessment and Research Conference to be held on Friday, June 9, at the Ohio Union. This year’s theme is “Making Data Meaningful: Addressing Critical Issues.” You can register online or call 614-247-6220 for more information. Presented by Student Life, the conference attracts student affairs practitioners, graduate students and other higher education professionals looking to exchange knowledge and ideas on research and assessment.

Green Cup-RecycleMania Challenge Winner trophy


Ohio State once again proved it is one of the nation's top schools for recycling. Ohio State finished in eighth place among 320 colleges and universities in the total recycling category of RecycleMania, with more than 1.1 million pounds of materials diverted from the landfill.

In the Student Life residence hall competition, the winning community was German House. They received the Green Cup, pictured. Other winners were Scott/Mendoza/Torres complex (north), Lincoln House (west) and Siebert (south).

Healthy Shout Out

The United States Department of Agriculture has recognized the work of the Student Life Wellness Ambassadors in a new blog post, “How Ohio State Students Stay Healthy with MyPlate.”  The post highlights the “interactive and fun events around campus discussing nutrition and other wellness related topics” put on by the Ambassadors.
